at last we left Jamaica, with the Colonel and James 18th. November on a Friday as usual, on board
the rascalled Chatham. 12 of us were squeezed into the Cabin, which is only large enough for 4: here
my Father was again annoyed and insulted by the Colonel, for as I made my Father's bed on the floor,
I of course placed my Father's side next to the Colonel's, so when I kicked my Father he moved to avoid
me and in so doing touched the Colonel who treated him like a brutes I sincerely hope to God I may never
see his face again I had the tooth ache dreadfully bad again and the Colonel sneered at me and said I
sham ed; we had rain almost all the passage which was rough and boisterous; we had nearly run on the
breakers off St. Andrews! indeed we were on them, but by the exertions of the passengers (who all with
the Colonel assisted) got us off clear and saved us from destruction we intended to have landed first at
Salt Creek; but the wind and weather obliged us to proceed to
SAN JUAN de NICARAGUA where we arrived
27th. November Sunday. This settlement, for as yet there's no town
lies in 11° N and 85° W. the Colonel and all the passengers went on shore and took lodgings; as we were
to remain to repair our rigging etc. the Colonel lodged at the Governors, but we poor pilgarlicksa pilgarlick is a wretch or worthless person , my
Father, James and I, were to stay on board, which made the Capt. very sulky, as we eat his provisions,
the Colonel wrote to my Father to desire him to dress and bring me ashore with him, to be introduced to
the governor, a pretty governor he was !! he never asked my Father either to eat, drink or sleep we 3
(for James is now our only companion) walked to the Musquito shore to pick shells etc. for Jane,
there are some very beautiful ones, but the finest I ever had, the Colonel took from me to sent
to England
4th. December Sunday. I am very particular about the date, as this was the most memorable and eventful
day I ever experienced in my life. and I dare say not 2 boys in England, or Europe ever went through
the miseries I did on that day; I will now relate it.
I rose before day light, tortured still
with the tooth aches went with the Capt. on board H.B.M.S. Skip Jack with a note from my Father to
the Surgeon had tooth extracted and another scarified, returned on board and found my Father had
just received a note from the Colonel; my Father has given me it to copy
